Motherhood

Dissembling

He met her ebullient morning tones with a desultory heavenward glance

Lying about, lying about a creeping throatiness and a need for a day in bed, to sweat it out.

Her effervescent eloquence about thisnthat stuttered to an evanescent halt

His furtive plans to keep her at home, tied up, busy applauding his importance

Feigning lassitude and a scintilla of a sniff he waited to be waited on

With hot drinks and shared DVDs.

But his victory was Pyrrhic, as she stuck the thermometer under his tongue

And called for the crone-next-door to come.

Before You Were Mine

Before You Were Mine

Before you were mine
I sang to you
In warm water
While you elbowed me
And stuck out your foot
Against my skin
To be admired

After your birth
I sang to you
While you screamed
And railed against
Your surroundings
With balled up fists
And red faced bawls

Before you were grown
I sang to you
Making up stories
While you listened intensely
Because you were the heroine
Leading, rescuing, searching
For the happy ending
