I never knew him as he died before I was born. I only have his wife’s version of events and therefore it was surprising to find out today that he served in the First World War. He appears to have served in the Highland Light Infantry, and served in France in 1915 when he was twenty. He then became a lieutenant in a different regiment – the Royal Field Artillery. All of this has been lost in the family record so I take off my hat to the people who faithfully record these details on public records and make them available online. Imagine being only 19 and being sent to fight in a trench warfare.
