Yesterday we had lunch at a Costley and Costley establishment that we use for an occasional treat. They have special menus which are not as dear during the week but on Saturdays, it seems, you are expected to pay full whack. Part of the price is of course the spectacular views from the panoramic windows and the white table cloths and crockery/cutlery. It’s not silver service but the staff are well trained to look at ease and interested in you as an individual. They were very kind to my disabled companion.

I never have a starter as you may have worked out by now but my companion had a mushroom and celeriac soup which came with a roll (but no butter). The soup was tasty I was told but celeriac is not one of my favourite flavours so I’d have avoided that in any case.

For the mains I had a delicious medium rare fillet steak on a bed of mashed potato accompanied by half roasted potatoes and a peppercorn sauce (optional). The fillet was generous and even more delicious when the jug of sauce was poured on top. My companion had a vegetarian option of a pancake filled with vegetables accompanied by a cheesy looking sauce. I was told it was delicious.  Both of us shared the bowls of chips and hot al dente vegetables and it was a full plate which both looked and tasted appetising.

For dessert I plumped for one of their ice creams, mainly because someone at the next table had ordered a Knickerbocker Glory which looked fabulous. I had the caramel and fudge option but didn’t do it justice as my eyes were bigger than my stomach and I sent more back than I actually ate.

We both had coffee which came with a soft buttery fudge and my companion had a brandy. In total it came to just under £50 without the tip.

There are only two disabled parking spaces and having scammed the room and realised the age group of most of the diners, it must have been handbags at dawn to try and get them. There is a decent car park and an overflow which is down/up a hill but if you are at all infirm this would be a real obstacle.

The staff are very nice and the toilets were clean and freshly scented. The fish in the foyer are calming as you hand over your coats/cash as you arrive/leave.
