I’ve recently finished Freedom by Jonathan Franzen which has sections which will make you laugh and others which are terribly depressing. Walter and Patty Berglund seem to have it all with a strong marriage, two clever children and a house in a good area. Slowly the layers are peeled back to reveal that all is not as it seems as Walter and Patty make individual decisions which rebound on their “perfect” lives. The story is told from three main perspectives in the third person which doesn’t really work at one point as it is meant to be a journal written by Patty so her insistence on making it third party jars. Apart from that one niggle though, this is a book which manages to be both an easy read and a worthwhile one. (Oh and the sex scenes are well done)
